Note to the BORDERS List from Anne Hupert gg-grandparents, Peter Jardine and Betsy Scott, lived a building called Allerly Lodge in Gattonside (Parish of Melrose) for many years in the mid and late nineteenth century, and her great-grandmother, Janet Jardine, was born, raised, and married there. Answer: Allerly Lodge in Gattonside, Melrose, is still standing and still in occupation. Allerly Lodge is of course the lodge house (gate house) to the much larger and grander Allerly House. Allerly House was built in 1823 by Sir David Brewster one of the leading scientists of his day. His main field was optical investigation and he was the inventor of the kaleidoscope. He was a good friend of Sir Walter Scott and their families often picknicked together. When Brewster died in 1868 he was buried in Melrose Abbey churchyard. Presumably your relatives were employees of the then occupiers of Allerly House, possibly Brewster??.

Peter married Elisabeth SCOTT, daughter of Robert SCOTT and Betsy MARSHALL, on 14 Jan 1848 in Melrose, Roxburgh, Scotland.462 (Elisabeth SCOTT was born about 1824 in New Blainslie, Melrose, Roxburgh, Scotland and died on 17 Apr 1893 in Gattonside, Melrose, Roxburgh, Scotland 389.)
