   General Notes:

KIRKBY-STEPHEN PARISH is of great extent, being 10 miles in length, and averaging about 5 miles in breadth. It is bounded on the south and east by Yorkshire, on the north by the parishes of Brough and Warcop, and on the west by those of Crosby-Garret, and Ravenstonedale..... Many of the inhabitants in this part of Westmorland, and in the adjacent dales of Yorkshire, are employed at their own scattered dwellings in knitting coarse hosiery, principally for the use of sailors.
